A Story About a Cross

Dear St. Luke’s,

On Easter Day we celebrated redemption, and probably, in more ways than you assume. I imagine the story will live on in the mythology around St. Luke’s sacred objects for some time. The exact nature of the story has yet to be flushed out, but I imagine it will go something like this children’s story:

A long, long time ago there was a beloved priest at St. Luke’s who would make art inspired by scripture to make the people of St. Luke’s happy and to help teach them about their faith. One of things he made for them was a cross to carry into the Church, and the top of it was beautifully painted. Considering the cross represented an important story to tell, he even put gold around the edges, so it would look extra beautiful and important.

The people at St. Luke’s loved the cross and used it in Church every Sunday. Eventually the priest moved away, but the Church still had the cross to remember him by. Then one day the person who was supposed to carry the cross into Church on Sunday accidently dropped it, and it broke! The top would still stay on, but it would wabble all over the place, so it could not be carried in anymore. For years, and years and years, it stayed on the back wall where it was nice and safe, but everyone missed seeing it come into the Church.

Many people tried to fix it, but they just could not get it right. Sometimes it would be fixed for a little bit, but it would always go back to wobbling all over the place. One day a man came from a far away and strange land, and his job was to fix boats. He found a home at St. Luke’s and loved the people there. So much time had gone by only a few people could remember using the cross in Church, but when the boat fixer heard about it, he used his boat fixing skills and made the cross like new! It took a long time, but it was ready for Church on Easter morning, and everyone was glad to see it again, and remembered the story that it told.

-The End-

You see, we are like the cross. God made us beautiful and we are meant to tell stories about Jesus. Even though God made us and God loves us, sometimes we may become broken. This can happen in different ways, but one day you may realize that you need help from someone else. It is good to have a community of people from all over that are good at different things, because that means we have a lot of different people that can jump in when we need them. When we come together to tell stories about Jesus, then we realize that we can help those around us as well. Sometimes the hardest part is just realizing that we need help in the first place, and Church can be a place where we let God and our neighbors know that we need them.

Blessings,

Nick
