In honor of the Juneteenth Holiday, the services today will include Spirituals, and hymns from Lift Every Voice and Sing. The Christian church draws upon a rich repertory of music that was composed and performed by African-American musicians who were never compensated for their work. In recognition of this fact, St. Luke’s will make donations to two organizations (the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts) on a biannual basis. This decision grew out of our Sacred Ground workshop, which seeks to support the Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation and justice under the banner of Becoming Beloved Community.
